It is common sense for the president of a country to nominate cabinet members who are qualified for their positions. However, this is exactly what President Trump has failed to do. Dr. Ben Carson, Betsy DeVos, and Andrew Puzder are three particularly unqualified nominees.

Dr. Carson has achieved staggering personal feats, climbing out of poverty to become a great pediatric neurosurgeon. In view of his medical background, one might expect that he would be nominated for the Health and Human Services Department or that he would become the next U.S. Surgeon General. However, he was nominated to lead the Housing and Urban Development Department. He has never worked in urban planning before, and the only justification for his nomination is that he lived in government housing.

Betsy DeVos is a billionaire who was nominated to be Secretary of Education. The Department of Education deals with the funding of public schools, something that can change the lives of children all across America. However, Betsy DeVos is an advocate for school choice, meaning that children should go to independent and private schools if they want to. Her program takes funding away from public schools in favor of school vouchers, so that families can pay to send their children to these independent schools. She advocates for a system that would defund public schools for the benefit of for-profit schools, a textbook example of contradictory policy.

Andrew Puzder is the former CEO of CKE Restaurants, the parent company of popular fast food chains such as Hardee’s and Carl’s, Jr. As the former chief of a fast food company, Puzder would seem to be a nominee who actually has experience doing the job of his department. Had he been appointed Secretary of the Department of Labor (DOL), Puzder would have managed the minimum wage in regions throughout the country, including the 15 dollar minimum wage in California. However, he is opposed to raising the minimum wage anywhere. Puzder also supports increasing automation to increase workplace efficiency, even though this would remove human jobs. As the head of the DOL, he would have managed the jobs of the people of the United States.

Despite public opposition, Dr. Ben Carson was confirmed as Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, and Betsy DeVos was confirmed as Secretary of Education. While Andrew Puzder withdrew from his nomination, Alexander Acosta, a politician with similar views as Puzder, was confirmed as Secretary of Labor.
